Test Case Management Systems

Integrate code-based tests with enterprise documentation and tracking systems.

In this lesson, you will learn how to bridge the gap between your C# unit/integration tests and enterprise Test Case Management Systems (TCMS) to ensure your automated results are visible to stakeholders.

Bridging the Gap

At an enterprise scale, passing tests in a console window aren't enough; you need to track quality metrics, compliance, and traceability inside systems like Azure DevOps Test Plans, Jira (with Xray/Zephyr), or TestRail.

The core challenge is mapping a method-level test (like a [Fact] or [TestMethod]) to a specific enterprise "Test Case ID." When your CI/CD pipeline executes these tests, you must programmatically report the status back to the TCMS to maintain a "Single Source of Truth."

Implementation Strategy

Instead of manually updating spreadsheets, you use the TCMS’s API to report results during the test teardown process or via a custom test reporter.

Here is a conceptual approach using a custom attribute to decorate your tests:

[AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Method)]
public class TestCaseIdAttribute : Attribute
{
    public string Id { get; }
    public TestCaseIdAttribute(string id) => Id = id;
}

// Usage in your test suite
[Fact]
[TestCaseId("TC-101")]
public void ProcessOrder_ShouldUpdateInventory()
{
    // ... test logic ...
}

By leveraging the ITestExecutionFilter or a custom TestLogger (as discussed in previous lessons on CLI execution), you can intercept the test results. When a test completes, you extract the TestCaseId, check the Outcome, and use an HTTP client to update the enterprise system:

public void HandleTestOutcome(string testId, TestOutcome outcome)
{
    var payload = new { Status = outcome.ToString(), Comment = "Automated C# Execution" };
    _httpClient.PostAsJsonAsync($"/api/v1/test-cases/{testId}/results", payload);
}

This integration creates a closed loop where code-based validation automatically updates your enterprise compliance documentation. It removes the manual overhead of updating progress trackers, ensuring that your Audit Log Verification and API Documentation sync perfectly with your actual test coverage.

Key Takeaway: By decorating tests with unique identifiers and hooking into the execution pipeline, you transform isolated C# tests into integrated, traceable enterprise quality records.
