In this lesson, you will learn how to perform non-disruptive system upgrades by replaying historical event streams through updated service versions to migrate state to a new schema.
The Challenge of "In-Place" Migrations
When your system logic or data structure evolves, you often face the "big bang" migration problem: updating the database while the application is live. In an event-driven architecture, we treat our event store as the single source of truth. Instead of complex SQL migrations, we can perform a "logical migration" by replaying events.
Designing the Migration Pipeline
To migrate data, we spin up a new version of our service alongside the existing one. We then point this service at the historical stream of events. As the new service processes these events, it transforms the data into the new schema and persists it into the target storage.
Consider a scenario where you are moving from a UserCreatedV1 event to a UserCreatedV2 event:
public async Task MigrateEvents(IEventStore store, IDataRepository repository)
{
// Fetch historical events
var events = await store.GetEventsAsync(streamId: "user-stream");
foreach (var @event in events)
{
// Translate old schema to new domain model
var updatedUser = EventTranslator.Upgrade(@event);
// Persist to the new data store
await repository.SaveAsync(updatedUser);
}
}
Critical Considerations
- Idempotency: Since you are replaying events, your
repository.SaveAsynclogic must be idempotent. If you crash halfway through, you must be able to restart without creating duplicate records or corrupted state. - Dual Writing: During the transition, your service should consume new incoming events and apply the new schema logic, while the background migration process handles the historical "backlog."
- Event Transformation: You aren't just copying data; you are essentially re-running your business logic. If the logic for calculating a user's loyalty score changed, the replay process will automatically apply the new calculation to historical data.
This approach effectively decouples your deployment from your data migration, allowing you to verify the migration against the new schema in a side-by-side environment before fully switching the traffic over.
Key Takeaway: Rather than migrating databases in place, use event replay to derive the new system state by passing historical events through updated domain logic, ensuring the transformation is deterministic and testable.
