Integrating SignalR with Azure SignalR Service

Scale to millions of connections by offloading the connection management to managed cloud infrastructure.

In this lesson, you will learn how to offload massive connection management from your local server infrastructure to the Azure SignalR Service to achieve planet-scale real-time capabilities.

Beyond Local Scaling

When building high-traffic applications, your server's hardware limits—specifically CPU and memory consumption per persistent WebSocket connection—become a bottleneck. Even with effective Optimizing Garbage Collection for High-Traffic Hubs, managing millions of connections locally is resource-intensive. Azure SignalR Service acts as a managed proxy, terminating client connections in the cloud and forwarding message traffic to your application servers via a backplane.

Offloading Connection Management

By integrating with Azure SignalR Service, your backend application is relieved of the burden of maintaining persistent state for every client. Your servers only need to handle the business logic and message processing. This allows you to scale your application servers independently of the number of active connections.

To implement this, you swap your local SignalR backplane with the Azure service via the Microsoft.Azure.SignalR NuGet package. Inside your Program.cs or Startup.cs, you replace the standard AddSignalR() configuration:

// Instead of just .AddSignalR()
builder.Services.AddSignalR()
                .AddAzureSignalR(options =>
                {
                    options.ConnectionString = "YOUR_AZURE_SIGNALR_CONNECTION_STRING";
                });

When this is active, the Azure SignalR Service handles the connection handshake, heartbeats, and keep-alives. When a client sends a message, it travels through the Azure service to your app server. When your server needs to broadcast a message to millions of users, it sends one message to the Azure service, which then fans out that message to the respective clients.

This architecture ensures that even if your app server experiences a restart or a load-balanced shift, the persistent connections between the clients and the Azure service remain stable. By decoupling the connection lifecycle from your application process, you gain the ability to support millions of concurrent users without ballooning your server infrastructure costs.

Key Takeaway: Integrating with Azure SignalR Service enables seamless horizontal scaling by offloading connection overhead to managed infrastructure, ensuring your application remains responsive under massive concurrent load.
