In this lesson, you’ll learn how to architect decoupled state management in Blazor to prevent tightly coupled components from becoming an unmaintainable "spaghetti" of data flow.
The Problem with Local State
As your Blazor application grows, passing data through multiple layers of component parameters—often called "prop drilling"—becomes a maintenance burden. When a deep child component needs access to user preferences or authentication status, relying on parent-child chains forces every intermediate component to know about data it doesn't actually use.
Decoupled State via Services
To achieve a decoupled architecture, we move state out of the UI components and into State Container Services. These services act as a "Single Source of Truth." By leveraging the Dependency Injection (DI) system, you can inject these services into any component that needs access to the state, regardless of its position in the component tree.
Implementing a State Container
A robust state container should provide a way for components to subscribe to changes. This ensures that when the data changes, the UI updates automatically.
public class UserSettingsState
{
private bool _isDarkMode;
public event Action OnChange;
public bool IsDarkMode
{
get => _isDarkMode;
set { _isDarkMode = value; NotifyStateChanged(); }
}
private void NotifyStateChanged() => OnChange?.Invoke();
}
In your Program.cs, register this as a Scoped service. Any component can now inject this service and use the OnChange event to trigger a StateHasChanged() call when the state updates.
Architectural Benefits
This pattern adheres to the principle of Separation of Concerns. Your UI components are now only responsible for displaying data and initiating actions. They no longer contain the logic for how that state is computed or persisted. Because the state is managed in a standalone class, it becomes significantly easier to unit test your business logic without needing to render a full component tree.
By centralizing state into these specialized services, you transform your Blazor application from a collection of isolated UI fragments into a cohesive system that follows a predictable, unidirectional data flow.
Key Takeaway: Decouple your application state into specialized, injectable service classes to eliminate prop drilling and establish a predictable source of truth across your component architecture.
