Cloud Service Providers Overview

Introduction to major cloud providers: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and their market positions.

Cloud Service Providers Overview

What you'll learn: You'll discover the three major cloud providers that power most of the internet and understand what makes each unique.

The Big Three Cloud Providers

Think of cloud providers like competing airlines — they all get you to the cloud, but each offers different routes, services, and pricing. Three companies dominate this space:

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

AWS launched in 2006 and is the market leader, holding roughly 30-32% of the cloud market. Like Amazon.com revolutionized online shopping, AWS pioneered cloud computing services. It offers the widest range of services (over 200) and has the most global data centers.

Microsoft Azure

Azure is the strong second, with about 23-25% market share. Microsoft leveraged its existing enterprise relationships — companies already using Windows, Office, and Active Directory find Azure integrates seamlessly with their existing tools. It's especially popular with large corporations.

Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

GCP holds roughly 10-11% of the market but punches above its weight in specific areas. Google excels at data analytics and machine learning (think: the company that invented modern AI search). It's popular with startups and companies needing advanced data processing.

Why This Matters

These three providers handle the vast majority of cloud computing worldwide. Netflix runs on AWS. Spotify uses GCP. BMW uses Azure. Understanding their market positions helps you:

  • Know which provider to learn first (often AWS for job opportunities)
  • Understand that despite differences, they all provide the core characteristics you learned: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service
  • Recognize that skills transfer between providers — learning one makes learning others easier

Key Takeaway: AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud are the three dominant cloud providers, with AWS leading in market share, Azure strong in enterprise integration, and GCP excelling in data and AI capabilities.
